The Denver Nuggets have become one of the most recognizable teams in modern NBA basketball. Based in Denver, Colorado, the franchise has built a strong identity around skilled offensive basketball, intelligent passing, and a core led by superstar center Nikola Jokić. After winning the first NBA championship in franchise history in 2023, the Nuggets have remained an important force in the Western Conference.
The team’s story, however, is much bigger than one championship. Denver has spent decades developing its identity, producing memorable players, building a passionate fan base, and establishing itself as a regular playoff contender. The arrival of Jokić transformed the franchise’s possibilities, while Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon became important pieces alongside him.
The 2026–27 season brings another chapter. Denver finished the previous regular season with a 54–28 record and third place in the Western Conference before losing in the first round of the playoffs. The team then made several offseason changes, including adding veteran scorer DeMar DeRozan and young players such as Marvin Bagley III, Trevon Brazile, Alpha Diallo, and Bryce Hopkins.
With a new-look supporting cast surrounding its established stars, the Nuggets enter the new season with plenty of attention on how the team develops.
The History of the Denver Nuggets
The Denver Nuggets have a long history that began before their arrival in the NBA. The franchise originally played in the American Basketball Association, where it became one of the league’s notable teams. When the ABA and NBA merger took place in 1976, Denver joined the NBA.
The Nuggets quickly developed a reputation for exciting offensive basketball. The team played in an era when high-scoring games were especially memorable, and Denver became associated with players who could score, pass, and entertain.
Several stars from earlier generations helped establish the franchise’s identity. Alex English became one of the most important players in Nuggets history during the 1980s. David Thompson, Dan Issel, and Fat Lever were also major figures who helped Denver remain competitive during different periods.
The franchise later produced another generation of notable players, including Dikembe Mutombo, who became famous for his defensive ability and shot-blocking. Although Denver experienced periods of rebuilding, the organization continued searching for the combination of talent and team chemistry needed to compete at the highest level.
The biggest transformation came with the selection of Nikola Jokić in the 2014 NBA Draft. Jokić was selected 41st overall, a position that made his eventual rise into one of basketball’s most influential players particularly remarkable.
Over time, Jokić developed from an intriguing young center into the central figure of Denver’s basketball system. His ability to score, rebound, and create opportunities for teammates changed how the Nuggets could attack opponents.
Jamal Murray, selected seventh overall in the 2016 NBA Draft, became another essential part of the team’s future. The combination of Jokić’s playmaking and Murray’s scoring ability eventually gave Denver one of the NBA’s most dangerous offensive duos.
The Nuggets’ breakthrough finally arrived in 2023. Denver reached the NBA Finals and defeated the Miami Heat to win the first championship in franchise history.
That championship was especially significant because it represented the culmination of years of development. Jokić was named Finals MVP, while Murray played an important role throughout the postseason. Denver Nuggets Aaron Gordon, who joined Denver in 2021, also became a key part of the team’s championship formula.
Nikola Jokić, Jamal Murray, and the Current Nuggets
The modern Denver Nuggets remain centered around Nikola Jokić.
Jokić is unusual because of the way he combines the responsibilities of a traditional center with the skills of an elite playmaker. He can score near the basket, shoot from outside, rebound, and create passing opportunities that allow Denver’s offense to move through him.
The NBA’s 2026–27 season preview highlights Jokić as the foundation of Denver’s offense. The league noted that the Nuggets ranked among the NBA’s top seven offenses for each of the previous 10 seasons and that the 2025–26 team produced its strongest offensive season during that stretch.
Jamal Murray remains another major part of the team’s identity. During the 2025–26 season, Murray played 75 games and averaged a career-high 25.4 points per game, while also recording a career-best 62.2% true-shooting percentage.
Murray’s ability to create his own shot gives Denver another offensive option when Jokić is heavily defended. His chemistry with Jokić has developed over several seasons, making their two-man actions a central part of Denver’s offense.
Aaron Gordon is the third major piece of the team’s established core. Gordon provides size, athleticism, defense, and finishing ability. His versatility allows him to defend different types of players while also contributing offensively Denver Nuggets.
Health has been an important factor for Gordon, however. He appeared in only 36 games during the 2025–26 regular season, according to the NBA’s season preview. Denver’s preferred starting lineup played only 23 games together but recorded an 18–5 record in those games.
That statistic illustrates why availability matters so much for the Nuggets. When the main players are healthy and together, Denver has an established system built around complementary skills.
The 2026–27 roster also includes several new or developing players. DeMar DeRozan is the most prominent veteran addition. The six-time All-Star brings years of scoring experience and has joined Denver after averaging 18.4 points per game in the previous season.
The Nuggets also added young players and developmental pieces, including Trevon Brazile, Bryce Hopkins, and Alpha Diallo. Cam Whitmore joined the team on a two-way contract in September 2026, according to the NBA’s team information Denver Nuggets.
These additions give Denver more options as it tries to strengthen the supporting cast around its established stars.
What to Watch From the Nuggets in 2026–27
One of the biggest questions surrounding Denver is defense.
The Nuggets have produced excellent offensive numbers for years, but their defensive performance has been less consistent. The NBA’s 2026–27 preview notes that Denver ranked 21st defensively in each of the previous two seasons.
Improving on that end of the court will be important if Denver wants to make a deep playoff run. Strong offense can carry a team through many regular-season games, but postseason basketball often demands consistent defense, rebounding, communication, and half-court execution Denver Nuggets.
Alpha Diallo is one player the organization hopes can help in this area. Before joining Denver, Diallo was named EuroLeague Defensive Player of the Year. His defensive ability could provide additional versatility on the wing.
DeMar DeRozan also gives Denver an experienced offensive option. At 37, he brings a long résumé and the ability to create his own shot, although the NBA’s preview identified his fit in a potential sixth-man role as something to watch during the season Denver Nuggets.
The Nuggets will also need contributions from players such as Christian Braun, Cam Johnson, Marvin Bagley III, Julian Strawther, and others on the roster.
The overall depth of the team is particularly important because Denver has experienced injuries to key players in recent seasons. The 2025–26 campaign demonstrated that issue clearly, with both Gordon and Jokić missing significant time while the team still managed to finish 54–28.
The Western Conference also remains highly competitive. Denver shares the conference with established teams such as Oklahoma City, Minnesota, Golden State, the Los Angeles Lakers, and others. Denver Nuggets The NBA’s Northwest Division preview described the division as potentially one of the league’s deepest heading into 2026–27.
For Denver, maintaining consistency throughout the regular season will therefore be important.
The team’s coaching staff is another part of the story. David Adelman remains the head coach, with a staff that includes former NBA players and experienced coaches. The organization has also added veteran coach Dave Joerger to its staff, with the NBA identifying defensive improvement as an important part of his role.
The combination of established stars, experienced veterans, young players, and coaching adjustments makes the 2026–27 Nuggets an interesting team to follow Denver Nuggets.
Why the Denver Nuggets Remain So Popular
The Nuggets’ popularity comes from more than their championship success.
Denver has developed a recognizable style based on passing, movement, shooting, and Jokić’s ability to control the game from the center position. Watching Jokić operate as both a scorer and passer has become one of the team’s defining attractions.
The franchise also benefits from its strong connection with Denver and Colorado. Ball Arena provides a home environment for supporters, while the Nuggets have become a major part of the city’s professional sports culture Denver Nuggets.
The championship in 2023 created a new generation of supporters and gave longtime fans a historic moment to celebrate. It also placed the franchise on a larger international stage.
Jokić’s international popularity has further expanded the team’s audience. His rise from a second-round draft selection to a multiple-time MVP and NBA champion is one of the most notable player-development stories of the modern NBA.
The relationship between Jokić and Murray is another reason the Nuggets attract attention. Their chemistry has developed over years rather than being created overnight through a major roster change Denver Nuggets.
As the team enters another season, supporters will continue watching how that established core works with the newer players around it.
